Rendering unto Caesar

Another 4th of July and local church sanctuaries become temples for the flag.

In observance we stand as the flag enters and is presented. Silent and still and somber as the choir sings the Star-Spangled Banner, lyrics periodically paused as a reader provides details of the writer’s motivation.  And we demonstrate our Christian heritage by pledging allegiance to the Stars and Strips god that waves in the wind.

We stand oblivious to the fact that just as the 10 Hebrew spies spoke the thoughts of the giants of the sons of Anak, the church has expressed the greed of Caesar and given him all.

Mark 12:17 (KJV) And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

Numbers 13:33 (KJV) And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
