As I understand It – 1 John 1:7 (NIV)

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

As I Understand It – Romans 8:26-28 (NIV)

Romans 9:26-28 (NIV) 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:26-28 (NLT2) 26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

When we pray in the Spirit or by the Spirit, we are yielding our voice to God to pray to Him what we should pray. The Father knows what the Spirit is saying and causes all things to work together for our good.

God cares about us so much that He does not want us to miss it, ever. And He has provided a way for us to pray to Him saying the correct thing. We are not required to pray in the Spirit, but it is a magnificent help if we do. Romans 8:26-28 is important because it provides a tool for praying the will of God!
